                                                  Chapter three: Demon or Saint?

Shadows of the darkness swept through and between the tree trunks - fast and slimy they were - no human eye could see or touch, but only feel the distinctive smell of them. A sour sweet and rare taste they said they had - but that unfortunately, left a terrible and unwished bitter taste in the ones mouth from "those-who-wished-too-much".

Anyone who followed the dark forces couldn't return - not even the almost burned out candle - nothing.

Just days before the black magic had spread across the country, an evil man known by the most treacherous and magical creatures in the whole world found a book - well hidden in a cave full of dragons.

A book that held a power dark as night, unfertile, deadly and only contained pure evil.

The man took control over the black magic and made everything colorless, pale and extremely cold as ice. Darkness filled every corner of the victim’s homes, screaming souls and ghosts took their place on the graveyards, demons driveled over the abandoned houses and witches ride on their brooms - something that none would ever imagine in the reality, but only in the most terrible nightmare…

The magical creatures and foes obeyed their new master without hesitation; they knew from the start that if they didn’t obey – Death would soon be knocking at the door.

With hard lashes onto the backs of innocent people, the black magic soon grew and spread fast throughout the country…

* * * *

Al Zalam was lying down on a bed while a pretty tall figure with a purple cloak watched over him with its sharp eyes.

The young boy was shivering. Was it of the cold or was it only of the terrible memories? None knew. The mystical man laid one of his hands on the boy’s forehead. It was warm – probably because of the light fever he had got since he was found in the old shed.

The man rose up from his seat and went towards the kitchen. He grabbed a dry piece of cloth and dipped in one bowl with warm water, went back to the boy and laid the cloth over his, now burning, forehead.

- That’s better, now jus’ get some more sleep and afterwards you’ll feel much better, the man said as he patted Al on the head.

Hours later of guarding and nursing Al finally woke up – unaware of where he was. He looked around of astonishment of the things that could be seen in the gigantic room. There were large and many book shelves around the room and that were full of thick books. The room itself had warm and gentle touches of red, orange and yellow colorations on the walls and a round window was few feet away in front of him. A magnificent place to live in.

- Amazing, isn’t it, asked an old voice from behind.
- Who are you, Al asked both with fright and curiosity.

The man stepped out of the shadows and in to the light. He had a black beard that touched his chest, a cloak with long sleeves, one crooked and one pair of hawk-looking eyes.
- I am Yiou Klonga the wizard. I found you in my old shed in a drawer. It seemed like you have gone in to a fight with the neighbor’s cat, now haven’t you?
- Yiou Klonga the wizard?! It was your shed?! I thought the boys said it was abandoned… I’m sorry, Al said ashamed while he looked down at the floor.
- It’s nothing to be sorry about.
- But I’ve jus’ heard that wizards are tall and wears long hats and…
- Those are the traditional wizard-stories you’ve heard about now haven’t you? Did someone mention that every wizard looked alike?
- Uhm, no.
- Very well then… when it comes to my size – I am tall in the reality but I can make myself pretty small by using magic.

Al’s ears pointed straight up when hearing the word “magic”.

- I see that you seem to be interested in adventures and experiences… well I can’t stop you from having fun with your friends, but do not repeat this sort of stupid nonsense again, understood?
- Alright, Al paused, but you were the one who saved me right?
- I might have saved you from the fever, but my companion here did the whole rescuing part, Mr. Klonga said as he whistled a special melody.
- What was that kind of melody?

Suddenly a little hairy ball with flying ears came down from the living room - it looked like a little dog, you could see that it had the nose of a terrier, the dark brown eyes of a cocker spaniel and a couple of furry feet which were half the size of the creature itself – almost too cute to be un-noticed.

- Wow! Who’s this cute little fellow?
- He he, I thought you’d like him. It’s a Kymphscal.
- A what?
- A Kymphscal.
- Okay…so what does it do?
- What it does? It saved your life remember? And not only capable to do that, it’s a very helpful creature as well in the house and also a great teammate.
- Teammate? You mean, like in battles?
- For instance, but only when it comes to magical fights between good and evil.
- So it’s a magical creature then? Does it do magic?

Yiou Klonga sighed “what a curios boy” he thought.

- Yes it does. It can be extremely dangerous as well, even if it looks cuddly and innocent now, the wizard continued.
- Oh…
- Now let me ask you something; have you ever tried to use magic before?
- … No.
- Because Moey here discovered something when he found you… when I saw the cat a few hours ago then I also noticed something else – the whiskers and some of the fur of the nose had been burned away – quite impressive if you ask me, but don’t you remember anything of the incident?
- No… do you mean that I… had contact with magic?
- Not only had contact – I think you have the magic float in your veins.
- Huh? Am I a magical creature?! A… devil?
- Devil no, no, no, no! Why do you say so?
- My parents say that only evil has magic… Al sighed
- Hey, cheer up! Not all the creatures are vice – take me for instance - do I look dangerous to you?

Al shook his head.

- You see not everything in the world could be evil, though there is something you have to be aware of: don’t use magic to harm, disgrace or cheat - it’ll just give you problems in the future and worse – it could turn you to one of the dark side’s forces!

Al looked shocked at the wizard when he heard that. Mr. Klonga sat down beside him on the bed and explained:

- I see that you carry a strong power within you, you should be careful when using it. Or maybe you shouldn’t use it all… until you get to know it first.
- But it couldn’t have done any harm to me! When the cat came I felt, like I was choking. So it couldn’t have been magic.
- You might have an allergic reaction to cats, but I don’t think you could have possibly been aware of using the magic itself.
- What do you mean?
- What I mean is that the magic is very powerful and can do great damage, not only to the enemies but also to one self. You were having a light fever from the time when I found you, though the magic could have killed you if no one had found you there.
- … I’m very grateful that you two saved my life and I feel that I owe you.
- I’m glad that you want to give something in return; it’s a sign of a pure heart. And there is however one thing you could do for me.
- Uhu?
- You have to learn the purpose of magic and I want you to become my student. I guess you go to school, right?
- Become a student of yours? But I don’t know if my parents would like that… they don’t like magic…
- … But they love you don’t they?
- Yeah, but… what can I do with my other school?
- I’ll take care of that. I can however tell your parents of your… malady, and that they will let me teach you.
- My parents?!… They must be worried about me! …Malady? You mean I’m sick?!
- Not sick, but you certainly have a problem to take control. Don’t you worry about your parents – I’ll take you to them.
- Oh, thank you so much, Al said happily as he embraced the wizard.
-  No problem, my boy. The hour’s late and you have to go to bed now ‘cause we’ll go back to your village tomorrow and talk about this to your parents.
- And to school, Al met his gaze.
- And to school, the wizard replied and smiled while patting the boy’s head.
